Castles, abbeys, kayaks and skunks

Kids can explore the river by kayak, ride the valley on the Llangollen Railway, or meet ducks and skunks at Greenacres. Grown-ups can stay home for the spa and gym or head out to walk the border country, chase history at Powys Castle and Shrewsbury Abbey or sample stylish shopping at Cheshire Oaks.

Country kids

Meander through the Dee Valley on the Llangollen Railway. Stay on the rails with the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, running westwards to Llanfair Caereinion.

Play indoors or out at Park Hall in Oswestry, with its playbarn, 3D climbing globe, zipwire, play village and nature walks. Challenge yourself to more than 8000 square feet of huge indoor climbing space across three distinct areas at Shrewsbury’s Climbing the Walls. Or just hang around the playpark at Llansantffraid.

Shoot uber-modern military laser-tag guns at Black Hawk Laser in an ultra-fun combat experience. Tackle a 1km outdoor track on 270cc Hondas at Rednal Karting. Or head to Plas Power Adventure for high ropes, archery, climbing walls, bushcraft, orienteering and an assault course.

Ride the hills and bridleways with Long Mountain Pony Trekking. Meet rabbits, guinea pigs, ducklings, chicks, piglets, owls, reptiles and skunks at Greenacres Family Park. Or say hi to a fine collection of owls, hawks and falcons at Battlefield Falconry Centre.

For the grown ups

You don’t need to leave the site to have a great time here. The River Tanat runs along the bottom gardens and guests can fish provided you have a licence. We can also arrange archery, falconry, pilates, yoga, Nordic walking and can set up massages and other pampering in the on-site spa.

Did somebody say good walks? Welsh border country is lovely all by itself, but just over an hour away sits the spectacular Snowdonia National Park and Offa’s Dyke. Or explore rolling farmland, open moorland, forests, lakes and reservoirs along sections of Glyndŵr’s Way.

There’s more good walking at Llandegla Forest Trail Centre and Coed-y-Brenin Trail Centre, and horse-riding at Penycoed Riding Stables in Pant. Shoot clay pigeons at Haimwood, or shoot under par at Mile End Golf Club in Oswestry. Shoot out to the shops at Shrewsbury or to Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Chester.

Chase history at National Trust properties such as Powys Castle, Erddig and Attingham Park. See one of Britain’s most spectacular and impressive early Iron Age hill forts at Oswestry, or spectacular Anglo-Saxon Shrewsbury Abbey. Take a tour of Stonehouse Brewery, with its traditional hand-crafted methods and great cask beer.
